Bears Defeat Titans 23-17 in Preseason Opener as Defense and Offense Shine Early
By: Jimmie Sykes
The Chicago Bears kicked off their preseason campaign in style, securing a close 23-17 victory against the Tennessee Titans at home. Fans were in for a treat in the opener, getting a glimpse of the changes coming from the Bears this offseason. New President and CEO Kevin Phillips is now over the operations for the team.
General Manager Ryan Poles and Head Coach Matt Eberflus are stepping into their second year with the team. Plus, a major emphasis was placed on upgrading the previously depleted roster. After a lackluster 3-14 finish for the 2022-23 season, the Bears dealt their number one pick to the Carolina Panthers to land Pro Bowl wide receiver DJ Moore. This matchup against the Titans was the NFL world’s first chance to see how that deal could pan out for Chicago.
The Bears' defense, showcasing their prowess with an impressive eight sacks, sealed the deal with efficient stops throughout the game. Coach Eberflus expressed satisfaction with the defensive effort, highlighting the improved pass-rushing and the opportunity to give valuable reps to the young players.
“Defensively, I thought we attacked the football well. I thought we rushed the passer better than we had, so you can see some improvements there, and we are excited about that. And then getting the young guys in there, the young guys that needed the reps,” said Coach Eberflus.
Defensive End Trevis Gipson had a show-and-prove mentality, and it was prevalent during the game. He finished with five tackles, one sack, and three QB hits. Terrell Lewis led the quarterback pursuit, recording two sacks, while seven pass rushers contributed to the sack tally, underlining the depth and strength that the Bears' defensive unit should be able to build upon this year.
The Titans' starting quarterback, Malik Willis, led his team on a scoring drive to open the game, but the Bears’ offense stole the show. Third-year Quarterback Justin Fields dazzled fans with a perfect passer rating, showcasing his connection with playmaker DJ Moore, who sprinted for a 62-yard touchdown, and Khalil Herbert, who displayed elusiveness on a 56-yard gain for another touchdown.
Fields, clearly relishing the presence of dynamic playmakers, expressed his appreciation for the ability to turn short passes into big gains, a crucial element for the Bears' success this season. For transparency, the Bears were ranked last in YAC (yards after catch) last season.
“When you have guys that can take a three-yard pass and go 50 yards, that just makes my job easier. It’s always good to have playmakers like that on the team. Just competing with each other and competing with the defense every day is just going to make us better. But as a quarterback, it’s always good to have playmakers like that,” said Fields.
The Bears’ offensive line was also a focus to watch in their preseason game against the Titans. The unit was tasked with protecting Justin Fields ad opening up holes for the running game. Rookie first-round pick Darnell Wright was seen in many looks, from pass blocking to pulling and sealing the outside on designed run calls.
The Titans, missing key offensive weapons Derrick Henry and Deandre Hopkins, still demonstrated competitiveness, with solid performances from Julius Chestnut and Hassan Haskins in the rushing game. Chestnut totaled 46 of the Titans' total 126 yards on the ground, while Haskins added their other rushing touchdown on the ground.
Malik Willis and rookie Will Levis split reps at quarterback over the course of the game. Willis finished 16/25 for 189 yards and an interception with one rushing touchdown. Levis finished 9/14 for 85 yards and an interception.
Rookie defensive back Tyrique Stevenson made an impressive NFL debut, showing off his skills with seven tackles, a loss, and a pass deflection, hinting at the depth he could bring to the Chicago DB unit. Another defensive back that was ready to play was Kyler Gordon, who got spectators fired up with two big hits early in the game.
On the offensive side, rookie running back Franschon Johnson’s impact was felt in the opener, carrying the load with 44 yards, including an explosive 24-yard breakaway run, setting the stage for a competitive running back room as the preseason progresses. This strong running back group could play a pivotal role in the Bears' third-down success during the regular season.
As the Bears gear up to face the Colts Saturday, there are several crucial factors to consider. Firstly, the effectiveness of their offense in the red zone will be a pivotal aspect. Can they convert their opportunities into touchdowns?
Additionally, the consistency of their defensive unit in generating pressure on the football, leading to turnovers, and providing a short-field advantage for the offense, will be vital. Lastly, the team's ability to respond in late-game situations will test their composure and resilience. These aspects will undoubtedly play a significant role in determining the outcome of the upcoming matchup.
These are just things to keep in mind as this Bears team continues to grow and prepare for the regular season. Right now, they are just focused on learning through the highs and lows while getting better each day.
