Soldier Field condition a topic of discussion in Bears preseason victory
By : Jimmie Sykes
While most spectators do not place their all into the preseason, there are people physically giving their all for it.
Those people are players out there giving 110 percent every down. Preseason is where you get the batch of young, impressionable players fighting to make an NFL roster. Several young players got to leave their mark on the fans in the Chicago Bears opening win.
The Chicago Bears defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 19-14 in the preseason opener. Bears put up 16 points in the 3rd quarter after trailing 14-0 at halftime. Super Bowl champion and new Chicago Bear Trevor Siemian placed points on the board with the Bears' offense. He found WR Dazz Newsome and rookie RB Trestan Ebner for 13 and 12-yard scores, respectively. Bears new Head Coach Matt Eberflus credits taking care of the football and defensive takeaways as a couple of keys for victory against the Chiefs.
Our historic, beloved Soldier Field condition was an early topic of conversation. It was significantly blotchy on the field, calling for workers to fill parts of the field with a sand-like substance.
Soldier Fields’ condition is something to watch for moving forward as relocation talks brew for the Bears. NFLPA President JC Tretter commented on the state of the field. It didn’t seem to recover following Elton John's farewell tour from about a week ago; nonetheless, today had to start the turn on the page for the Bears.
A new head coach, GM, and regime are set in place for this team. Practices, preseason, and regular season games will display a work in progress. Big expectations are placed under second-year quarterback Justin Fields and new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Fans got to witness a glimpse of their play calling through the first few possessions.
The Chicago Bears opened with a three and out to begin the game. Chiefs struck first, with QB Patrick Mahomes finding TE Blake Bell for a five-yard touchdown reception. Mahomes ended his day early, completing six of seven passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. Justin Fields completed four of seven passes for 48 yards in three possessions. Fields' most notable throws came on an impressive 26-yard catch by Darnell Mooney and a 19-yard one-hand grab by Tajae Sharpe.
Undrafted rookie linebacker Jack Sanborn and second-round pick Jaquan Brisker won over a lot of fans today. Both of them played full-throttle. Sanborn, an Illinois native, highlighted his day with an interception and a fumble recovery. Brisker practically forced a three and out with three impressive plays. A hard tackle, tackle for loss, and near-interception on Shane Buechele (12/19 99yards 1TD 1INT) all happened in one drive.
This preseason opener was a showing of where this team is right now. Following the win, it is back to the drawing board with two preseason games left. The Bears will hit the road to play the Seattle Seahawks on Aug 18.
